Peek Inside the Magic: A Year of Preschool Wonder

Welcome

The Peek-a-Flap yearbook was designed for St. Anne’s preschool to be a fun, interactive experience for the young students. Leslie Gibson, the assistant director, envisioned something extraordinary to celebrate the school’s 30th anniversary. Her idea was to incorporate a scavenger hunt, allowing preschoolers to open different parts of the book to uncover the school mascot—the St. Anne scuba diver warrior. As a mother, Ms. Gibson brought in several of her children’s books as examples, asking if we could create something similar. We enthusiastically said yes!

Creating the Peek-a-Flap design was a meticulous process involving multiple layers. First, we created a hidden image layer—this was the page featuring the school mascot, printed using litho printing on our offset press. There are 16 mascots spread throughout the book. The second layer was the flap itself, which was die-cut around the original mascot image. A metal die mold was created to cut out the flap area precisely.

The flap was printed as part of a larger piece with an extra section of tape, which we used for attachment. We carefully applied glue to the extra piece and manually attached each flap to the book, ensuring consistency by using a pre-made guide to position the flaps identically throughout the yearbook.

While the yearbook was a paperback publication, we incorporated several innovative treatments, making it stand out. United Yearbook is one of the few companies that takes the extra time and care needed to create the layers required for the Peek-a-Flap effect. We were thrilled to help make this yearbook adviser’s vision a reality, creating a keepsake that will be treasured for years to come.
