United Yearbook's Senior Spotlight Contest

United Yearbook invites you to participate in our annual Senior Spotlight Essay Competition and our Senior Section Competition! This contest comes in two parts:

Senior Spotlight Essay

For the essay portion of the contest, we invite yearbook seniors (from the current school year 2023-2024) to submit essays for the chance to win a scholarship from United Yearbook and our award titled the "Senior Spotlight Award." The Competition is based on how you answer the following question: How Has Yearbooking Prepared Me for My Future Endeavors? You will be evaluated according to the following criteria. In only 900-1000 words, double-spaced type, explain how your work in creating a yearbook prepared you for the future and include the following:

  • Voice–We will assess how you develop your ideas and the words you choose to express those ideas to create your unique, original voice. Your voice is your point of view articulated in a combination of content and style. United Yearbook desires to hear unique voices from their unique points of view.

  • Coherence–We will be looking at the focus of the essay and how well you develop and sustain the organizational flow. The way writers organize their thinking, and how they define and maintain their focus throughout their essay is important to United Yearbook’s content evaluation.

  • Mechanics–United Yearbook will review the writer's expertise in the written mechanics of grammar, spelling, use of transitions, and sentence formation.

The winner will receive $250 or up to $500 as a ‘scholarship’. The goal of the scholarship is for students to put the money toward their plans--i.e. college, vocational training or other post-secondary education.

Essays must be submitted by April 22, 2024. Winners will be notified on May 3, 2024.

One essay per student is permitted

Fairness and Integrity

  • United Yearbook is committed to maintaining fairness and integrity throughout the competition process.

  • Any form of plagiarism or use of AI will result in disqualification.

Senior Section Competition

For our 1st Annual Senior Section Competition, we invite you to share your senior section with us. United Yearbook will be evaluating your Senior Section based on the following criteria:

  • FunctionalityOverall, the section is compelling and attractive to the reader. We will review how each page spread was designed to impact the reader's experience. United Yearbook will gauge the quality and effectiveness of the designs deployed across the entire section.

  • Clarity–The "Seniors" story is effectively communicated and reflects the Yearbook Theme and Style throughout. United Yearbook will assess how the image, text, and design are coherently integrated to tell the Seniors' Story. In addition, we will evaluate if the Yearbook theme and style are enhanced throughout the section.

  • Consistency–We will be looking in the Senior Section for ease of readability and to find harmony, and visual continuity among the page spread layouts. United Yearbook will examine the degree to which the Senior Section is a pleasing combination of all parts working in unity. We expect to also find original creativity within the Theme and Style.

Our panel of judges is comprised of members with expertise in photography, design, and journalism.

The grand prize is $250 or up to $500 gifted to a winning high school yearbook class.

Winning the prize for both the senior section and essay amounts to $500. The prize will be split equally (or $250) if the winners for both parties (essay writing and senior section) are from two different participants of the same or different schools.

One entry per school

The deadline for entry is April 22, 2024. Winners will be notified on May 3, 2024.

Fairness and Integrity

  • United Yearbook is committed to maintaining fairness and integrity throughout the competition process.

  • Any form of plagiarism or use of AI will result in disqualification.

We look forward to receiving submissions from participating schools and witnessing the creativity and talent of high school leaders! Schools are given the option to enter both of the contests or choose the one they prefer. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please contact us at info@unitedyearbookprinting.com.

“The most important business of one generation is the raising of the next generation.

Nothing else you do in life will be as deeply satisfying...”

2024 Summer Internship

United Yearbook Printing is now accepting applications for our 2024 summer internships. This program aims to provide high school and college-age students job experience in a vigorous and nurturing professional work environment. Opportunities include copywriting and editing, digital content creation, journalism, sales and marketing, and business administration.

Candidates are required to submit three letters of reference and a written essay based on the book co-authored by our founder Sarah Y. Tse and two college professors from Biola University, Jeff McHugh and Robert Curtis, From Illusion to Reality: True Stories and Practical Advice on How to Prepare for Career Success Before Graduating From College. The book can be ordered on Amazon. The written essay must include (1) a summary of the book, (2) lessons learned from the book, (3) and applications of the lessons learned that can apply to your internship. The essay must be three to five single-spaced pages in 12-point font. Parents can assist minors in completing the following form, but the essay must be the applicant’s original work.

Applicants will receive a decision from us by April 30, 2024. The number of openings are limited. Once they are filled, this web page will be closed. We recommend all applicants submit their applications early. Interns who successfully complete the internships will receive a letter of recommendation and, potentially, an opportunity for future employment.

This program is open to students both in and outside of the U.S. Whether you are from Europe, Asia, or South America, we welcome you! Depending on your country of residency, you can complete the program remotely or at one of our collaboration sites in California. Our mission is to help you get ahead in your career development by giving you the tools you need and helping you discover your skills and purposes in life!

Diversity

&

Inclusion

A note from Sarah Y. Tse, Founder

United Yearbook Family,

United Yearbook is a company that values innovation in yearbook production and empowering every client we come into contact with. However, as a company, we are only able to achieve our unmatched innovation and customer service because we are committed to our employees first. Since we are located in Southern California, we acknowledge the beauty in diversity of race, ethnicity, age, religion, ability and life experiences; and we strive to reflect that within our staff.

We can only perform our best when every employee is uplifted with respect, dignity and empowered in who they are and their unique background.

We are continually learning, as a company, to find way to increase our diversity and awareness of this topic.

How We Will Do This

At United Yearbook, Diversity and Inclusion is more than just policies and practice–it is our value and commitment to making our company more holistic.

  • We will educate all staff and new hires on unconscious bias, microaggressions and cross-cultural communication.

  • Our workforce, including leadership, will increase in diversity.

  • We will actively examine our own company to ensure we are adhering to the unique needs of our staff.

  • We will look for ways to increase the accessibility of our products and services to our employees and users with disabilities.

United Yearbook will continue to hold diversity and inclusion as essential values to support our core values. Addressing issues of diversity and inclusion is the work of us all, and we want to do our part.

In order to best represent United Yearbook elsewhere, we must, first, ensure that our employees have representation within the company.

OUR STORY

Sarah Y. Tse, Founder
Concrete Wall
"Most products were nothing more than hardcover books with cookie-cutter formats and poor printing quality."
Perceivd a Need for Change

United Yearbook Perceived a Need

for Change Within the Yearbook Industry

Sarah Y. Tse, the founder of United Yearbook, had no intention of making a name for herself in the yearbook industry. In 2006, Sarah was in the printing business. A representative of a well-known yearbook company approached her about a new yearbook publishing company he was starting, promising to give her business. In anticipation, Sarah provided him with resources and built him yearbook prototypes all throughout 2007. However, the yearbook rep took advantage of Sarah’s kindness and refused to fulfill what he had promised. Sarah had gotten a glimpse of the yearbook industry, and she did not like what she saw: rampant dishonesty between companies, bullying (i.e., slandering other competitors), and overcharging for services–all for lackluster, uninspiring end products. The seed of an idea began to form in her mind in the first week of January 2008: her own yearbook company. This seed grew even more after Sarah had a dream about the name of her company: United Yearbook Printing. The very next morning, she went to the Recorder’s Office in San Bernardino, CA and searched for the name she had dreamt of. “United Yearbook Printing” did not show up in her search, which meant it was available, so she immediately registered the company and began her unexpected journey in the yearbook industry.

As she began her journey, Sarah found scant evidence of creativity within the yearbook market; most products were nothing more than hardcover books with cookie-cutter formats and poor printing quality. But this did not discourage Sarah–rather, it helped her discover her niche. She decided that United Yearbook would be a unique company, providing schools with multiple options for all of their innovative ideas and doing so within a shorter turnaround time than traditional yearbook companies. The decades of commercial printing, graphic design, and pre-press experience that Sarah brought to the business made her well-equipped to lead the production side of her own company. With a knowledgeable and experienced founder at the helm, United Yearbook stood tall, ready to be a leader in the field of creative, innovative yearbook publishing.

In 2015, United Yearbook ran into an obstacle: an Arizona yearbook photography company was selling the name “United Yearbooks” to other franchisees. Our company battled legal maneuvers over several years to regain its official trademark rights, which occurred in January 2018. We share this story to affirm that we are the only legitimate United Yearbook company in the world, and there is no one else like us!

Our Key Strength and Mission:

Empowering Your Drive for Innovation

The first obstacle we experienced as a company was building a reputation for ourselves among schools, because our potential clients had become comfortable with bigger-name brands that gave them lesser-quality products. A yearbook staff is often unable to produce their dream book because their publisher does not have the expertise they need to print highly innovative products. United Yearbook meets these needs, which have been long neglected in the industry, and the school districts that first doubted our abilities soon discovered how our company was different.

Our specific focus, a “client above sales” oriented approach, empowers yearbook staff to pursue and create an out-of-the box, non-traditional book. In light of this, we often do a little extra for our customers, free of charge, so that they can receive the highest-quality product. Additionally, we allow our clients to finalize the quantity of their order one month prior to the submission deadline. While over-buying would financially benefit our company, we do not want our clients to overpay and have wasted, leftover books. Traditional yearbook representatives are usually paid by commission, so the more books that are printed, the more compensation they receive. As a result of this, clients are urged to order books based on a higher projected quantity, and the school is unable to adjust the numbers when sales decrease later on. We, on the other hand, allow clients to adjust their numbers closer to the submission deadline in order to decrease wastage. In fact, our clients end up selling more yearbooks with us than with other companies because we offer help with marketing and sales. We are directly involved in mentoring the yearbook advisors as well as their yearbook staff, guiding them step by step from design and creative writing to marketing and selling.

Valuable Benefits Await You

Clients were initially skeptical of whether United Yearbook could live up to its reputation because their previous experiences with well-known companies were negative: they were constantly met with repetitive designs, inflexibility, overcharging, and poor customer service, to name a few. Several clients started with us, went back to their previous publisher, and then returned to us because of our innovative products, flexibility, and unmatched customer service. The value of our labor speaks for itself–it is not necessary for us to offer bribes and non-educational incentives and perks. Although it has taken time for school districts to recognize us, our reputation sets us apart in the industry. Incoming clients can expect mentorship, complete resources at their disposal, motivational tips for the yearbook staff, design ideas, help with marketing and sales, and a long-term relationship with United Yearbook. As a part of our elite service, we also provide in-person workshops on topics including journalism, creative writing, and team building. Eric Hartman, a former veteran yearbook advisor from St. Anne School (Laguna Niguel, CA), explained it very nicely: “United Yearbook gives clients everything they could possibly need.” Our mission is to do exactly that–helping you fulfill your vision without overcharging or sacrificing creativity.

Success Story:

"Less than 5 minutes guaranteed!"

Ashley, editor-in-chief on how to autoflow portraits in 5 minutes

Ashley participated in a one-hour workshop offered by United Yearbook, and she learned how to use the auto-flow features of United Yearbook’s software. By the time the workshop ended, she was uploading entire sections of portraits in five minutes. “Less than 5 minutes, guaranteed!” she emphasizes.

This amazing time-saving software aligns and assembles your portrait pages to make certain that portraits, names and quotes align perfectly, with only the touch of a button. An entire senior class can be uploaded by one student in minutes, not two to three students and hours of hit-and-miss and tweak-and-redo.

“No struggles!” says Ashley. “Just have a layout idea in mind when working with the software, and stay consistent with the other pages of the yearbook to maintain a professional design.”

Why don’t you find out about these auto-flow features for your yearbook? Any school or organization can bring bling to its yearbooks with United Yearbook’s software. It is easy to understand and easy to use, and if you ever have questions or issues, United Yearbook is always there, either on the phone or in-person! Let your creativity shine, with less stress!

Ashley receives some bling when she is surprised with a bouquet of her favorite candy and a WINNER medal from United Yearbook! Jay Ho, the yearbook adviser, presents her with the gifts to thank her for the extraordinary work in helping implement the yearbook software at Duarte High School. Her enthusiasm for creating a premier yearbook models the attitude and team spirit which United Yearbook recognizes and passionately supports.
